Want to learn to master the art of balancing security and freedom (and other polarities)?
Let's dive in!
Last week, one of my clients was hitting a wall (let's call him Brian).
"Shall I quit and leave money on the table, or shall I stay and keep the stability of my current income?"
The way the options were expressed, the situation seemed like a double constraint: feel free but insecure or secure but trapped.
I used a map that allows for the combination of polarities.
Brian understood his current strategies were all leading to what he was trying to escape: his biggest fears. With that new awareness, he created new strategies to align with his vision of becoming a full-cycle entrepreneur (making a successful exit and start a new venture).
Coaching polarities is truly powerful whenever one experiences inner conflict.
Traditional methods suggest compromising. Polarity coaching encourages embracing both ends of the spectrum.
The core of polarity coaching is understanding that opposing values are interdependent.
By recognizing this, you can create a positive spiral where security and freedom support each other.
Balancing polarities such as financial security and personal freedom can be challenging.
If not handled well, it can lead to a downward spiral.
Most people fail because they learn to choose between apparent opposites. The best solution they can imagine is a trade-off: a bit of both.
Compromise is a sub-optimal solution. It comes from our limited perception that it is impossible to combine both.
The discomfort can manifest as either clinging too tightly to job security or excessively pursuing personal freedom.
Only caring about job security might lead to chronic stress. It can cause health issues and strained relationships.
Too much focus on personal freedom can lead to lousy job performance and financial instability.
For Brian, this dichotomy had become suffocating.
He was feeling angry and frustrated when seeking security because he neglected his freedom. When he pursued freedom, guilt was overwhelming him for not fulfilling his job responsibilities in the family business.
Guilt and anger are subjective signs indicating an imbalance.
The solution lies in recognizing that polarized strategies only lead to the realization of our fears.
Awareness of these ineffective strategies can often be enough to disrupt them.
For instance, if you notice signs of stress or guilt, it's a signal that you're leaning too far toward one pole.
By spotting these patterns, you can avoid polarized thinking and balance security and personal freedom in your life.
The same is true for all other sources of inner conflict.
"When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly.
When people see some things as good, other things become bad.
Being and non-being create each other.
Difficult and easy support each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low depend on each other.
Before and after follow each other."
— Tao Te Ching, Chapter 2
The Tao Te Ching reminds us that balance and harmony come from embracing both ends of the spectrum.
Ken Wilber's Integral Approach emphasizes the need to integrate and transcend dualities.
This is key to reaching higher consciousness.
By combining financial security and personal freedom, you rise above the limits of each.
You move towards a fuller and more fulfilling life.
This wisdom can teach you something helpful for any inner conflict you might experience.
To put these insights into practice, start with a self-assessment using the polarity map.
Take a blanc sheet of paper. Divide it in two halves vertically. The same horizontally.
The sides are dedicated to polarities. The lower part is what happens when you focus on one polarity. The higher part is for your action plan when you manage to "integrate and transcend."
Identify where you currently stand on the spectrum of financial security (eg. on the left) and personal freedom (on the right). Or any polarity you might be stuck with.
Are you overemphasizing one at the expense of the other?
Important note: This is usually a fluctuating pattern. You try to satisfy both but independently, which makes you jump from one polarity to the other, creating confusion.
Then, find the warning signals. In Brian's case, the security option made him angry. The freedom option made him feel guilty. Write these signals in the lower part.
Now you have a map and a compass. Those signals helped him realize he should change his approach.
Visualize your balanced life. Include elements that represent financial security and personal freedom. Write your vision on the top of the map. This visual reminder will keep you focused on maintaining harmony.
The last step is to develop strategies that incorporate both polarities.
Doing this is inner work. It requires shedding light on our blind posts. Engage with a coach or mentor who understands polarity coaching. Their guidance can help you navigate challenges and stay on track.
